Recommended Resources on the Psalms, Part 1: Videos and Lectures

I’m currently preaching through the Psalms and went a little crazy in collecting relevant resources.  By that what I mean is that I’ve read more books, listened to more lectures, and bought more commentaries in preparation for this series than I’ve ever done before.  The Psalms are a universe of rich material to explore, and thankfully there is a wealth of wonderful, conservative evangelical scholarship in existence.  In my next few posts I’ll be directing our readers to some of the best material I’ve discovered, beginning with recommended videos and lectures.

  • David Gibb’s Three Messages on the Psalms from The Proclamation Trust 2013 Autumn Joint Ministers Conference – If you’re not familiar with The Proclamation Trust from the United Kingdom, you’re missing out.  They’re a ministry dedicated to equipping people to do expository preaching and teaching, primarily in local church contexts, and proprietors of an online treasure-trove of (mostly) free training resources.  These three videos on the Psalms are enjoyable to watch and include all sorts of of helpful information about how the book of Psalms is structured as a whole, as well as helpful suggestions for preaching them in your local church.  Mr. Gibb models his approach with expositions of Psalms 22-24.
  • John Woodhouse’s Three Messages on the Psalms – John Woodhouse is a past principal of Moore Theological College, Australia, and author of a highly-acclaimed commentary on 1 Samuel.  These three talks, also from Proclamation Trust, are entitled “The Psalms in the Bible”, “The Psalms and Christ”, and “The Psalms and the Gospel.”  The titles should tell you what they’re essentially about.  These excel in distilling some rather technical scholarship down into language most of us ordinary folks can understand.  Woodhouse is also an engaging speaker.  Unfortunately only the audio of these talks is available.
  • Steven Lawson’s Expository Preaching in the Psalms – Here’s a goldmine: an entire Master’s Seminary video course on preaching the Psalms by Dr. Steven Lawson.  If you’re unfamiliar with Lawson, he’s senior pastor of Christ Fellowship Baptist Church in Mobile, AL, teaching fellow with Ligionier Ministries, and author of scads of books.  If you’ve ever heard him preach, you’ll know he brings a wonderful blend of fiery passion and surgical precision.  While I haven’t read it, I imagine the material in this course is similar Lawson’s book Preaching the Psalms.  What a blessing to have a resource this helpful and extensive available for free!
  • James Hely-Hutchinson’s Five Messages Overviewing the Psalms –These talks were delivered in 2012 at St. Helen’s Bishopsgate Church in London.  St. Helen’s is a conservative evangelical Anglican congregation and over the years has hosted some truly great expositors (everybody from John Stott and JI Packer to John MacArthur and John  Piper).  Their online warehouse of free audio and video should be pillaged regularly.  In these five messages, James Hely-Hutchinson overviews the five books of Psalms and includes a special talk entitled “Principles for meditating on individual psalms as a Christian”.  Hely-Hutchinson is an expert on the Psalms and these talks are worth your time.

Lord willing, in my next post I intend to recommend a few commentaries for preachers on the Psalms.  I’ll close with an invitation.  If there are resources on the Psalms (i.e., lectures, commentaries, books, etc.) you’d recommend or would like me to review, leave them in the comments below and I’ll consider including them.
